Where comics at the forefront of social transformation or lagging behind in the 1960s?
When asked were comics at the forefront of social transformation or lagging behind in the 1960s I would have to say it’s a little of both. Comics were not the front of behind, they were mainly at the side of the social transformation. I say this because I don’t believe comic were behind the social transformations but at the same time I don’t think they were leading different movements either. They were mainly just reflecting events of society through comic books. For example when Peter Parker was caught in the middle of the riots on the college campus, the comic wasn’t necessarily ahead of its time but at the same time the comic wasn’t lagging behind this event in society, it was more at the same pace and just reflecting an event that happened. Comics did create comics that could relate to the average American like Spiderman and the social issues in the comics (mainly Marvel) were made so the Average American could relate. As society was changing so were comics. As the civil rights movement for women and African Americans progressed, we started to see more of these characters in comic books. This means that comics began to mirror the social transformations in society. Overall comics were at the forefront of social transformation or lagging behind, but in the 1960s comics would mirror society and reflect its issues
